AN EXPLORATIVE EXHIBIT FROM FACES' - 2020 EXPOSURE FESTIVAL
Myanmar. It is a country that is synonymous with political conflict, civil war and genocide. Formerly known as Burma, the country’s identity is evolving as it fights to make a name for itself in the modern world.
Having only opened the borders a few years ago, Myanmar is a polarized nation. There is a contrast of young and old, of tradition and technology. Of war and peace.
This series is a portrayal of the cultural differences between Myanmar and Burma, the old and the new. While Myanmar is in its purest essence, vibrant and colourful, the black and white is a nod to the conflict, to the tumultuous relationship between the military and the Rohingya. To the peacekeepers, social organizations and journalists who are trying to change the discourse of a vibrant nation.
The locals are friendly, helpful and beyond hospitable. Children run up giggling to take photos with those of faraway lands. Old women speak through translators to share their traditions.
Tourists are allowed to celebrate and take in the beautiful landscape, encouraged to share instagram worthy shots from UNESCO heritage sites, smiling faces and colourful villages. All while being shepherded away from the tumultuous conflict that lies beyond the developed roads.
